The dictionary describes autosuggestion (AS) as a hypnotic or subconscious adoption of an idea that originates through repetition of verbal statements to oneself in order to change behavior. As well, it is influencing of one’s own attitudes, behavior, or physical condition by mental processes other than conscious thought.
Associated with self-hypnosis, suggestion to oneself arises within one’s own mind and has effects on thinking and bodily functions. It is the process by which a person encourages self-acceptance of an opinion, belief, or plan of action.
Lastly, defined as the influencing of physical or mental state by thoughts and ideas that come from yourself rather than from other people.
Autosuggestion is the power of mind over matter
It is the mind convincing yourself of what you say. That’s why I strive to use positive wording in my daily conversation and thought process. Focus on positive thoughts to help with positive autosuggestion and wording. This is where positive affirmations helps. Reading them, writing them, every day.
It is a challenge, but a fun challenge. For example, focus on statements that do not contain negative words or phrases (“no, not, or never”). Oops! I did it, didn’t I? I could say, “focus only on making positive statements, excluding negative words or phrases.”
Once done, you become more aware of how often you really do use negative words and phrases, negative autosuggestion, in everyday life. Too often we unconsciously auto-suggest negative thoughts, “I’m too fat,” “I’m not clever enough,” “I’m a smoker.” You see where this is going?
This is not a new concept. Napoleon Hill, an American self-help author, introduced autosuggestion as the key to creating desire and belief. He is known best for his book Think and Grow Rich.*
We do it naturally. AS is one of the simplest, most powerful of mind programming tools. A simple mind power technique that is easy, accessible, done anywhere any time and requires no special skill or training. We have been using AS all our lives whether we recognized it or not. The trick is making it positive on a regular basis, consciously.
